Perplexity's Retreat From Ads Signals a Bigger Strategic Shift
The AI search startup once predicted advertising would be a massive business. Perplexity is abandoning plans to put ads in its AI search product as the industry looks for sustainable business models that won't hurt user trust. The changes are part of a larger strategic shift for the company, which has long focused on disrupting Google Search's business. Google is changing to be like Perplexity more than Perplexity is trying to take on Google, said a Perplexity executive at a press briefing on Tuesday. Executives spoke to the press on the condition of anonymity.

Low-resource Machine Translation: what for? who for? An observational study on a dedicated Tetun language translation service
Merx, Raphael, Correia, Adérito José Guterres, Suominen, Hanna, Vylomova, Ekaterina
Low-resource machine translation (MT) presents a diversity of community needs and application challenges that remain poorly understood. To complement surveys and focus groups, which tend to rely on small samples of respondents, we propose an observational study on actual usage patterns of a specialized MT service for the Tetun language, which is the lingua franca in Timor-Leste. Our analysis of 100,000 translation requests reveals patterns that challenge assumptions based on existing corpora. We find that users, many of them students on mobile devices, typically translate text from a high-resource language into Tetun across diverse domains including science, healthcare, and daily life. This contrasts sharply with available Tetun corpora, which are dominated by news articles covering government and social issues. Our results suggest that MT systems for minority languages like Tetun should prioritize accuracy on domains relevant to educational contexts, in the high-resource to low-resource direction. More broadly, this study demonstrates how observational analysis can inform low-resource language technology development, by grounding research in practical community needs.

As spicy as you want it: interactive fiction games put forward a new kind of narrative
In late May, in a 58m Bel Air hilltop mansion, influencers, reality stars and other Angelenos milled around Netflix-branded TV screens displaying choices to be made: Are you a Gemini or a Capricorn? What color are your eyes? The party marked the launch of the streaming giant's latest offering: a slate of Choose Your Own Adventure-style mobile games inspired by its most popular reality television shows, and attendees were selecting the traits of their digital avatars. "I better be a character!" Selling Sunset star Jason Oppenheim exclaimed as he paused near the top of a staircase that led to a reflecting pool with the Netflix logo floating in it.

Intelligent Classification and Personalized Recommendation of E-commerce Products Based on Machine Learning
Xu, Kangming, Zhou, Huiming, Zheng, Haotian, Zhu, Mingwei, Xin, Qi
With the rapid evolution of the Internet and the exponential proliferation of information, users encounter information overload and the conundrum of choice. Personalized recommendation systems play a pivotal role in alleviating this burden by aiding users in filtering and selecting information tailored to their preferences and requirements. Such systems not only enhance user experience and satisfaction but also furnish opportunities for businesses and platforms to augment user engagement, sales, and advertising efficacy. This paper undertakes a comparative analysis between the operational mechanisms of traditional e-commerce commodity classification systems and personalized recommendation systems. It delineates the significance and application of personalized recommendation systems across e-commerce, content information, and media domains. Furthermore, it delves into the challenges confronting personalized recommendation systems in e-commerce, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, scalability, and the cold start problem. Strategies to address these challenges are elucidated.Subsequently, the paper outlines a personalized recommendation system leveraging the BERT model and nearest neighbor algorithm, specifically tailored to address the exigencies of the eBay e-commerce platform. The efficacy of this recommendation system is substantiated through manual evaluation, and a practical application operational guide and structured output recommendation results are furnished to ensure the system's operability and scalability.

How OpenAI's ChatGPT has changed the world in just a year
Over the course of two months from its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT exploded in popularity, from niche online curio to 100 million monthly active users -- the fastest user base growth in the history of the Internet. In less than a year, it has earned the backing of Silicon Valley's biggest firms, and been shoehorned into myriad applications from academia and the arts to marketing, medicine, gaming and government. In short ChatGPT is just about everywhere. Few industries have remained untouched by the viral adoption of the generative AI's tools. On the first anniversary of its release, let's take a look back on the year of ChatGPT that brought us here.

Mark Zuckerberg: Threads has 'just under' 100 million monthly active users
Meta's increasingly aggressive push to promote Threads seems to be paying off. Mark Zuckerberg said the app currently has "just under" 100 million monthly active users, and that he thinks there's a "good chance" the app could reach 1 billion users in the next couple of years. "I thought for a long time, there should be a billion-person public conversations app that is a bit more positive and I think that if we keep at this for a few more years, then I think we have a good chance of achieving our vision there," Zuckerberg said during the company's third-quarter earnings call. Threads' growth has been closely watched since its July launch. The app saw 100 million sign-ups in its first week, but quickly saw engagement drop off amid complaints about limited functionality and feeds flooded with posts from brands.
Flashback: Stephen Hawking warned AI could mean the 'end of the human race' in years leading up to his death
Fox News contributor Joe Concha joins "Fox & Friends First" to discuss Elon Musk's warning that artificial intelligence could threaten elections and his concerns on the declining birth rate. Long before Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter warning that artificial intelligence poses "profound risks" to humanity, British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking had been sounding the alarm on the rapidly evolving technology. "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking told the BBC in an interview in 2014. Hawking, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than 55 years, died in 2018 at the age of 76. Though he had critical remarks on AI, he also used a very basic form of the technology in order to communicate due to his disease, which weakens muscles and required Hawking to use a wheelchair.

AI Advances Drive New Generation of Browser-Based Solutions
We have talked extensively about some of the biggest changes brought on by artificial intelligence technology over the last few years. Two of the many fields that has been affected by breakthroughs in AI is web development and mobile application development. We previously talked about some of the benefits of using AI to create great mobile applications. However, these applications may not always meet your needs. Fortunately, AI technology has also led to the inception of a number of browser-based solutions that can be worthy alternatives.

ChatGPT reportedly reached 100 million users in January
ChatGPT has been growing at a rate much, much faster than TikTok or any other popular app or service. According to a new study by analytics firm UBS (via Reuters and CBS), the OpenAI-developed chatbot was on pace to reach over 100 million monthly active users in January. The chatbot only became available to the public on November 30th last year, but its rise to fame has apparently been meteoric. Within its first month of availability, it already boasted 57 million monthly active users, the study said. By January, it was already being visited by around 13 million individual users a day.
Best 13 AI Chatbot Development Framework & Platforms You Should Know
Since the upsurge of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the necessity of chatbots has increased. This is because people had to work from home. This meant that any business using human dialogue systems took a hit. A chatbot is a software application deployed to a website or an application. A chatbot can engage in a conversation with a human and understand the person's needs.
